🏳️⚧️ 2025 Taiwan Trans March — Break Prejudice, Shine Diversity
As the world moves backward, we must move forward together.
2025 has been a heavy year for LGBTQ+ communities worldwide, especially for the trans community. In the U.S., the government rolled back inclusive policies and announced it would only recognize “male” and “female.”In the U.K., the Supreme Court sent a deeply harmful message by ruling that “transgender women are not women.” Nearly sixty years after Stonewall, some nations are still moving backward, clinging to rigid binaries that push people back into the shadows.
Rigid frames work like invisible walls. They don’t just separate us—they shut out the light.
Here in Taiwan, trans communities carry their own burdens. Last year, a Taiwanese writer in Japan was forced to come out after relentless harassment, doxxing, and sexual abuse. Early this year, a Filipina trans woman was denied entry to a Taipei nightclub and insulted at the door. At Hotline, we meet trans people who are turned away from housing, rejected in job applications, or face obstacles in banking and medical services, challenges closely tied to Taiwan’s requirement of mandatory surgery to change official gender markers, which makes everyday situations requiring ID difficult or delayed. And in our 2024 School Climate Survey on LGBTQ+ Students in Taiwan, trans students were almost four times more likely than cisgender students to avoid using school bathrooms. Big or small, these stories show us the same truth: being trans in Taiwan is still far from easy.
And when the light is blocked, shadows spread. Some people hide there for safety. Others can only show who they are quietly, on the margins.
But this isn’t just a trans or LGBTQ+ problem. Even cisgender heterosexual people are policed by rigid gender roles: boys told to be tough and never cry, girls told to stay gentle and not too ambitious. A boy who weeps may be mocked; a girl who speaks up may be told she isn’t “feminine enough.” These stereotypes confine us all.
That’s why we need each other. When we truly see one another, we begin to break those frames. We let the light reach every life.
On Friday, October 24, at 7:00 pm, join us. Sometimes even the smallest candle can help someone lost in the dark. A caring message. A kind gesture. Standing quietly beside someone who feels alone.
This year’s Taiwan Trans March is not only for trans and LGBTQ+ people. It is for anyone who has ever struggled in the dark. Let’s walk together, carrying light for one another—because we all know how that feels.
Join the 2025 Taiwan Trans March. Together, we can break the binary, challenge prejudice, and light the way to a future full of color.
