【News Release】20200220 Transnational same-sex marriage in Taiwan?

You are eligible to register your marital union at any local household registration office in Taiwan as long as you bring with you the following documents:

A. Marriage application;

B. Passport;

C. An English as well as a Chinese copy of your single status certificate be authenticated by the Taiwan Economic & Cultural Office (TECO) in your country.

As one of your home countries has not yet legalized same-sex marriage, household registration officials would claim that the couple should not be eligible to marry in accordance with Aritcle 46 of the Act Governing the Choice of Law in Civil Matters Involving Foreign Elements.

However, there are a prosperous wedding industry and friendly churches as well as buddist temples in Taiwan, so foreign citizens can still host a wedding party in Taiwan and celebrate with your families and friends.

You are eligible to register your marital union at any local household registration office in Taiwan as long as you bring with you the following documents:

A. Identity document of both parties (Taiwanese ID card and the passport of the non-Taiwanese national);

B. Marriage application;

C. An English as well as a Chinese copy of a single status certificate of the non-Taiwanese national notarized by the local consulate.

If you have already got married in another foreign country, in addition to Document A mentioned above, you should also bring your marriage certificate issued by the country where you registered and notarized by the local foreign consulate.

*If in need, you can be registered as same-sex partners at any local household registration office except for in Hualien County, Taitung County, Yunlin County and Penghu County bringing both an English and a Chinese copy of a single status certificate notarized by your local consulate.

*The same-sex partner registration does not grant legal protection enjoyed by a spouse in a marital union.
